Do you know the term “Narrative” and “story”? Or are you confused by the two words? Well, practically both terms have similar meaning. However if we discuss more, the term “story” is referring to the events inside the narrative. It means that a story can be without a narrative sense. The fundamental element of narrative text is the existence of complications inside the story. A story with the absence of a narrative sense is what we call recount text or in the job employment term, usually we call it personal narrative.
This post is about some examples of narrative story. Because they are labelled as narrative texts then the story should expose some complications faced by the characters or participants along the story going on. Now let’s see some famous narrative stories around us.
Narrative Story 1 – Pinocchio
The story of Pinochio is a great example narrative text. Remember every narrative story should have one or more complications along the plot. Let’s see the Pinocchio story. This story is interesting enough to make us keep reading it as it has been addapted to modern touch.
Once upon a time there was a woodcarver, called Geppetto who lived with out a child. So he decided to make a puppet and named him ‘Pinocchio’. As he began to carve the wood ,in surprise him,Pinocchio laughed at him. When Geppetto was getting finished, the puppet kicked the old man and ran-out of the door.
As Pinocchio was running on the street,a policeman caught him but people said to the policeman that puppet belongs to Geppetto. So the policeman arrested the old man instead of Pinocchio.
Pinocchio had to remain alone at home and felt hungry so,he tried to cook an egg. As it put on hot pan, a little chicken flew away. Then he sat by fire. When Geppetto came to house, the old man saw the puppet’s feet had burnt.Geppetto then made him new feet and some clothes to go school like real boy. Geppetto was so poor because he had to sell his coat for Pinocchio’s text book.
On the school way, Pinocchio heard some exciting music came from a puppets show.He went there and joined it’s show with them.At first the puppet master angry with Pinocchio but later he made a friend with Pinocchio and gave him five gold coins
One day a fox and cat came to him. Pinocchio ran and climb a tall oak tree. Luckily Pinocchio was rescued by a beautiful blue fairy who lived nearby. The fairy asked about his coins. He said that he had lost his money. Then his nose began to grow longer and longer. The fairy laughed and said.”that what happens when you lie.”
That parts of Pinocchio story is taken from wiki answer . Reading above story, we see the points that there are some complications along the story and that is why it is a narrative story.
Narrative Story 2 – Rapunzel
Again we see another narrative story “Rapunzel”. There are some version with different way it goes on but the following version is great one.
A pregnant woman sent her husband to a witch’s garden to pick up some rapunzel (salad plant) since she was craving it. The witch caught the husband for stealing from her garden. She told him that he could take some plant but she would get the baby when it’s born. The husband agreed and brought some plant to his wife.
When the baby was born, the witch took the girl. When the girl was old enough, the witch locked her in a tower with no exit. The only way to get in was by having Rapunzel throw down her hair so that the witch could climb it.
One day, a prince came by and saw the witch climbing the hair into the tower, and after the witch left, he called out, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair.” She lowered her hair, he climbed up and they began an epic love story until the witch founds out.
The witch cut off the girl’s hair, and sent her into the wild, wait for the prince coming. When the prince was climbing up the witch dropped him. The prince fell. He was blind and roamed the land in search of Rapunzel.
Eventually, he found her. Rapunzel cried into his eyes. The tears cured him of his blindness. They returned to his kingdom to live happily ever after.
That story is adapted from Lyss @ yahoo answer. The adaptation is in the mode of it should be written – simple past tense. I prefer the mode of past tense as logically narrative is retelling a story or past experiences. So reading it, we find out that Rapunzel and the Prince struggle hard to solve their problems as the complication of that story. In that way the story of Rapunzel is called narrative. Remember that the complication is sometime st to one or more. If the complication is more than one, we understand that one of them is minor to rise into the major complication. It leads the story into rising conflict then climax and falling down to get the resolution.
That’s all about 2 examples of narrative story, Pinocchio and Rapunzel. Keep reading this blog for generic structure of narrative text.
